Jonny left school after completing his A Levels and started a 4 year apprenticeship in the tool room of local packaging business, Huhtamaki Group. Here he worked on tooling and maintenance activities to service the factory. After another year of training to fine tune his skills, Jonny left in 2011 to become part of the BPE family. He was the first non-family member of the team.
Jonny is skilled in using CNC programming software to prepare parts to be machined. He also manages a team of programmers and production operatives, ensuring that the right people are assigned to the right programmes and machines to maximise production and meet deadlines. Jonny loves his job and the constant change within the company. He says:
“Things don’t stand still for long when you work at BPE. We never have a year where we don’t move forward. Every year brings new challenges and at the end of the year when I look back at where we were this time last year, I can see how much we’ve achieved and that keeps things interesting.”
Being an engineer by trade, he also gets a lot of satisfaction from seeing something come into the factory as a drawing and leave as a high quality finished part.
Jonny (like a number of the BPE team members) has a passion for motorsport, both bikes and rally cars. He said, “a lot of my team mates have a motorcycle background too and a few are into cars so when a motorsport job comes in, we all get excited and want to work on it. Anything engine related brings the whole team together!”
When he’s not working, he likes to ride his motorcycle and dabble in a bit of golf. He once went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and has been to the Isle of Man TT. He also follows the road racing a bit. Jonny lives locally and has purchased an older house which he’s working on restoring. Once his house project is complete, he says he’ll maybe take his wife on holiday and can picture them doing a touring holiday around Europe to see lots of different places. Being a fan of Top Gear and watching the team on their travels has also sparked a bit of an interest in seeing some further away places like South Africa, Vietnam and Peru. Maybe someday we’ll go, he says!
When he retires, Jonny could see himself with his own workshop where he’d customise cars and motorbikes but not for at least another 20+ years yet!
