Production Manager at Boyce Precision Engineering

Gavin McCormick

Production Manager

Gavin’s engineering career began many years ago at Lisburn Tech (South East Regional College) where he completed an HND in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering alongside a 3 year tool making apprenticeship in the global aluminium casting company, Montupet. Gavin spent 7 years at Montupet and 5 years as a machinist in local packaging company, Huhtamaki Group, before joining the BPE team in 2012. As one of the first to join the small but skilled team, Gavin has seen Boyce Precision Engineering grow by over 30 team members from his early days.

Gavin works closely with the senior management team to identify daily production priorities and organise production schedules. He’s responsible for determining which parts will run on each machine, the sequence they will run in and which operatives are best suited to deliver each task. Gavin himself is a 5 axis cell leader and does both 3 and 5 axis programming and machining. He liaises with BPE’s suppliers on tooling, equipment, hardware and software requirements, and works on continuous process improvement, quality management and cost reduction initiatives. Gavin plays an active role in the implementation of SMED projects – the Single-Minute Exchange of Dies system for making reductions in the time taken to complete equipment changeovers. He also contributes to health and safety management and delivers job specific training to team members.

Gavin looks forward to seeing a quality finished part come off a machine with minimal scrappage, and enjoys implementing changes to the production process to drive scrap levels down and quality levels up.

He is a fan of motorsport, track racing, and mountain biking and passionate about maintaining and improving his own fitness. He regularly nips out to the garage for a quick weights session or circuits routine in his home gym. He’s also a rugby fanatic and supports the Ulster and Ireland rugby teams.

Gavin is used to being on his feet and isn’t one for sitting around. He rarely manages to watch a film from start to finish but does enjoy a quick half hour on the Discovery Channel to see the nuts and bolts of how various things are made!

His family holiday plans include making a trip to Hong Kong at some stage to visit his brother who lives there. At the weekends, family time is Gavin’s priority. He and his wife Lynne often plan day trips to entertain and spend quality time together with their young daughter Jaime.
